Specialization: Liberalism and its critics; American constitutionalism; ethics and public affairs; citizenship; rights; public education policy; church-state relations; international justice. Macedos writings range across the fields of political theory, ethics, American constitutionalism, and public policy, with an emphasis on liberalism and its critics, and the roles of schools, civil society, and public policy in shaping citizens. He is author of Diversity and Distrust: Civic Education in a Multicultural Democracy (Harvard University Press, 2000); Liberal Virtues: Citizenship, Virtue, and Community in Liberal Constitutionalism (Oxford University Press, 1990); and The New Right v. The Constitution (Cato Institute, 1987). His essay, Homosexuality and the Conservative Mind, (Georgetown Law Review, December 1995), won the Fred L. Berger prize of the American Philosophical Association. Among his edited volumes ! are Reassessing the Sixties: Debating the Political and Cultural Legacy (W.W. Norton, 1997), Deliberative Politics: Essays on Democracy and Disagreement (Oxford University Press, 1999), and Moral and Political Education, NOMOS XLIII, co-edited with Yael Tamir, (New York University Press, December 2001). He is co-editor, with Walter F. Murphy, James E. Fleming, and Sotirios A. Barber of the forthcoming American Constitutional Interpretation, 3rd ed. (Foundation Press, 2002).
